Tour
& Trail Maps feature: large, easy to read 1:40,000 scale;
digitally drawn for clarity and accuracy; includes a wealth of
topographical detail;
all DWG published walking routes are clearly marked; 1 minute
Lat/Long grid (5km UTM grid on Lanzarote, no grid in Aracena);
GPS Enabled with Datum and Meridian information.
Super-Durable (S-D) editions of our Tour & Trail Maps are printed
with 100% oxygenation inks, on high density polymer with a fused
china clay surface, to produce a map that feels like silk but
will withstand the toughest outdoor conditions and outlast any
paper map several times over.
2000; new millenium new approach. The switching off of SA (selective availability) from the US navigational satellites (thank you President Clinton) now means that standard GPS systems have an accuracy similar to the DGPS system we have used. Now you do not need a differential receiver (operating off maritime navigational beacons for our system) to get 1 metre accuracy. With SA switched off you won't need those 'OS' beacons to get 'OS' accuracy. For me this is a major benefit as before I would backpack our vehicle system plus a rechargeable 12v battery, now I can use a lightweight handheld and have a 3kg lighter backpack.
Our Spring 1999 Newsletter contained details of our exciting new range of "Digitally Drawn" maps which are being worked on by ourselves. Eight years on and we have come a long way as our latest list of map titles shows and our maps have drawn much praise; Country Walking magazine nominationg Alpujarras Tour & Trail Map best for that region, while Mallorca North & Mountains Tour & Trail Map was "Book of the Week" in The Sunday Times along with Walk! Mallorca North & Mountains.
Surprisingly compiling the initial digital databases for each map region is far more labour intensive than conventionally drawn map production. However once these massive databases are compiled, updating them is very quick. Throw in that these updates have a minimal "pre-press" cost and it means that we can produce updated editions of our maps far more often than a conventional map publisher. This means that those new roads being built already appear on the new editions of Alpujarras, La Palma, Lanzarote, Madeira, Mallorca, Menorca, Sierra de Aracena, Tenerife and La Gomera Tour & Trail Maps. Now that really is a great innovation for the new millenium!
If you think that mapping is just about going through some satellite and aerial photos then this photo taken on Madeira (March 99) shows how important "on the ground" observation is

This is the permanently locked road which most maps show as a public road, from a junction mid-way between Poiso and Pico do Arieiro (on Madeira)!
