walking press reviews

Press Page

We are very pleased with the press reviews which DWG Walking Guides have received so far. Of course we would like more of them, but what there have been are top quality. I am sorry but I am going to reproduce the reviews in full, rather than the 'edited highlights' doctored to a business' needs that you usually see. So here goes.

Mail on Sunday 'Walk! the Brecon Beacons' plus all the UK Walk! series as 'Book of the Week'; on the opening day of the London Book Fair - our trade contacts were mightily impressed!

Walk (Ramblers' Association) Summer 2005. Walk! Mallorca West. One of an extensive series of neat little walking guides covering the sunny islands of the Med. (Not as little as the RA's own guides!)

Mail on Saturday January 2005. Walk! La Gomera - a fabulous little book. . . . difficult to reproduce a two page article on our favourite island see Daily Mail website.

The Sunday Times 8 August 2004 Walk Mallorca North & Mountains + Mallorca North & Mountains Tour & Trail Map - Book of the Week. "You can't fault Discovery Walking Guides for attention to detail. Its new series on Spanish hiking hot spots benefits from original mapping by roving cartographer-publishers David & Ros Brawn, and goes the extra mile to provide idiot-proof directions - invaluable in territory where smiling farmers and reassuring waymarks do not come as standard. The biggest innovation is the inclusion of GPS "waypoints" along the routes . . . . for full version see Sunday Times website.

Country Walking Best Map Alpujarras Tour & Trail Super-Durable Map in Alpujarras article.

Trail April 2000. " . for definitive route guides and walking advice on all warm island destinations in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, the Warm Island booklets from Discovery Walking Guides are priceless." Couldn't have put it better ourselves!

Daily Telegrapgh 1/5/1999. With its tremendous variety of landscapes, Tenerife has always been a rewarding island for walkers. The leaflets marking trails produced by the Spanish authorities are hopelessly vague, but expert help can be found in the cheerfully written series of Warm Island Walking Guides produced by two winter residents, David and Ros Brawn. These cover the north, south and west of the island.

Walk an island. If you are off to a warm island this autumn to catch an Indian Summer then you may be interested ia a series called Warm Island Walking Guides. They provide OS maps with details of routes, views, geology, flora and local bars and restaurants where possible. Destinations include: . . . . . . Traveller Magazine Autumn 1997. Not quite a review but the editor is very impressed with our style and it is the most recent press notice.

Holiday news. Guides with a difference. If you're planning a holiday in the Canary Islands, take a look at Discovery Walking Guides. A walking map and a series of detailed routes cost £3.99 (795 pesetas); the walks (graded from easy to more difficult) make use of local public transport to get you to a starting point and follow scenic paths. Finally they steer you in the direction of good refreshment stops. The field guides to the island's plants and flowers make colourful additions. Choice Magazine. Note this review was from our early days before we expanded out from the Canary Islands, and the price increase to £4.50 to reflect the cost of 'OS' map licencing. Just as our web goes 'to press' we have another 'innovative' review in Choice June 97 magazine.

Bookshelf. Discovery Walking Guides: 'El Hierro', 'La Gomera', 'Mallorca North' and a new edition of 'Tenerife South' (Discovery Walking Guides, £4,50 each) Extravagantly volcanic and varied in vegetation, the Canaries are recognised increasingly as a fine venue for walkers. Most of the islands offer a good range of walks, from the easiest to the frankly awesome. Mallorca, too, is full of unexpected beauty and demanding gradients. The Discovery Walking Guides concentrate on the gentler end of the scale./ Each guide consists of two folded sheets in a single see-through plastic wallet. Each sheet typically has a good-sized contour map on one side (1:25,000) of military origin over-printed with Discovery routes. The map is surrounded by tightly-packed text describing individual walks, at least half of it on the side that does not have the map. This means constsant turning from back to front - the least practical part of the arrangement. / The text is comfortably unassuming, almost domestic in tone. There are some surprising touches, like "itinery" for "itinerary", but one develops a real sense of intimacy with the writers, "Ros" and "David". We even learn about their footwear. / They are keen on local-style bars and restaurants, are excellent on public transport and do their best to encourage people to walk wherever they are - to the extent of commending a rather nasty route north along the coast from Playa de las Americas in Tenerife. When it comes to the truly beautiful, like the ravine-trenched uplands of La Gomera, the text acquires an almost idyllic tone. / Compared to the better-known series of Sunflower Guides the Discovery Guides may seem rather limited. There are no car tours and no vertigo-inducing walks for "experts". What the Discovery Guides do offer is a sense of mild adventure shared. Many will value this aspect. Adam Hopkins. Daily Telegraph. Now that is a 'warts and all' review and we are not afraid to quote it in full, though I would have liked to underline some words for emphasis. Note that as a result of Adam Hopkins' review we have changed the design of all later titles so that you now have the text and the map in view at the same time for the majority of walks. The 'rather nasty route' is Walk 3 in Tenerife South (one of our favourites for the number of interesting country tipicos along its route) where demolition and building works have degraded the first couple of kilometres - see Tenerife page. If you want to check Adam Hopkins' credentials do an author search in the Internet Bookshop to find a list of travel titles written by this respected writer.
